The region of North Island is characterized by fertile valleys and long fjords. As in all of Iceland, many fishing towns are found close to the shores but agriculture is also developed thanks to the lush valleys. High mountains that reach from the mountainous terrain of central Iceland end here in steep inclines blocked by the sea that in winter become ski trails.

North Iceland is quite populated and the tourism industry here flourishes. Visitors enjoy whale watching, snow skiing, fishing, horseback riding and of course a visit to the northern capital town, Akureyri. The town is the central services, entertainment and industry area of North Iceland and is also the perfect starting point for trips around this wonderful region.
