The historic town Reykholt is located on route 523, west of Borgarnes. Reykholt was home to Iceland's most important historical figure, famous sagas author Snorri Sturluson, who was murdered in the 13th century by a rival politician. Reykholt, classed as an important intellectual center in the history of Iceland, today boasts an impressive church that is home to a museum exhibiting copies of the antique sagas.
Not far from the town Reykholt, is Hraunfossar waterfall, otherwise known as the "Lava Falls". This waterfall, located on the Hvita River, is one of the most interesting waterfalls in Iceland. Here you can witness a unique natural phenomenon in which cold springs of subterranean water seep from ledges of porous rock lava and fall down abrupt mountain slopes of more than a kilometer. There is a trail that runs from the waterfall to Barnafoss Waterfall, otherwise known as the "Children's Waterfall" where, according to legend, two children from a neighboring farm fell into the river from a natural bridge that used to be there.
