Navigation App — User Guide

Everything you need to get started and make the most of your trip planner while in Iceland.

Enter your booking number to access your full trip itinerary.

  • Web-based app — works like a website. No download needed. Use it at home on your computer or on your phone while traveling in Iceland.
  • Add to Home Screen (recommended)
    • iPhone: Open in Safari → tap Share → "Add to Home Screen"
    • Android: Open in Chrome → tap ⋮ → "Add to Home Screen"
  • Internet connection required. Coverage across Iceland is excellent. Any local SIM, eSIM, or international plan works — the app uses very little data.
  • Best browsers: Chrome (Android & iPhone) and Safari (iPhone).
  • Google Maps integration. Make sure Google Maps is installed on your device before you travel.
01 App is not loading

In 99% of cases, this is due to no internet connection. Check your connection by opening another website or app.

02 Navigation is not opening

Make sure location services are enabled and that your browser has permission to access your location.

iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → ON

Then: Settings → Safari → Location → Allow

Android: Settings → Location → ON

Then: Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions → Location → Allow

03 Route is only partially displayed

This usually means that some roads (such as F-roads) are still closed for the season. The route will update automatically once they open.

04 Daily mileage is missing

Mileage is not displayed when roads are still closed. It will appear automatically once those roads open.

05 A point seems to be missing from the map

All points listed below the map are present on the map. If one appears missing, it is likely overlapping with a nearby point. Zoom in on that area to reveal it.

06 Trip dates appear to start one day early

This is a known display issue that commonly affects travelers based in the United States. Due to the time zone difference between the US and Iceland, the app may show your itinerary beginning one day before your actual arrival date.

Your booking is not affected — the dates are correct. Once you arrive in Iceland, the app will display all dates accurately according to local Icelandic time.

Barnafoss

Barnafoss & Hraunfossar

Difficulty
Easy
Suggested time
2–3 hours

Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming out of the Hallmundarhraun lava field and cascading into the Hvítá river — one of Iceland's most unusual natural phenomena. Just steps away, Barnafoss (Children's Waterfall) rushes through a narrow rocky gorge with thundering force. Together they make one of the most scenic and accessible stops in West Iceland.

Visit in the morning for the best light and fewer crowds.
Wear waterproof shoes — the path along the river can be slippery.
Combine with a visit to Reykholt and Snorrastofa nearby for a full day in the Saga Valley.

Another Iceland — Important Info
Important Info
Before You Go
Most nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, NZ) do not need a visa for Iceland. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date.
Your regular driver's license is valid in Iceland — no international license required.
Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended.
Weather
Iceland's weather is mild but unpredictable. Warm Atlantic currents keep winters manageable, but wind is the real challenge year-round — even on sunny days.
Check vedur.is daily — the official Icelandic Met Office for forecasts.
What to Pack
Layer up — the "onion method" works best in Iceland. Add or remove layers as conditions change.
Waterproof windproof outer shell
Fleece or warm mid-layer
Hat, gloves and ear cover
Waterproof hiking boots with good grip
Swimwear (for geothermal pools)
Sunscreen SPF 30+ and sunglasses
Driving in Iceland
Headlights and seatbelts are mandatory at all times.
Speed cameras are common — strictly obey limits.
Watch out for sheep crossing roads, especially in early summer.
F-roads (highlands) require a 4WD vehicle — never drive a regular car on them.
Zero tolerance for drink driving.
Strong gusts can rip car doors off — open carefully.
Road conditions at road.is · Safety alerts at safetravel.is
Money & Payments
Currency is the Icelandic Króna (ISK). Foreign currencies are not accepted.
Visa and Mastercard accepted virtually everywhere.
ATMs are widely available. Banks open Mon–Fri 10:00–16:00.
VAT refund on purchases over ~6,000 ISK (~$45). Ask for a Tax-Free form in-store, claim refund at the airport.
Tipping is not expected, but 10% for exceptional service is appreciated.
Duty-free at the airport arrival hall has the best alcohol prices in Iceland — stock up on arrival.
Parking
Most paid parking lots in Iceland use the Parka.is app — available on iOS and Android.
Pay by international credit card — no printed receipt needed.
The system recognises your plate number automatically.
Also covers road tolls and some nature site fees.
Download Parka.is before you leave — it saves time at the first stop.
Fuel
Many stations are self-service 24/7 — you'll need a credit card with a PIN. When heading into remote areas, fill up at every opportunity.
Food & Eating Out
Dining out is expensive — expect $35–55 per person at a sit-down restaurant.
The local hot dog (Pylsur) is a cheap, filling classic — around $5–6.
Best budget supermarkets: Krónan and Bónus.
Tap water is among the purest in the world — no need to buy bottled water.
Hot tap water is geothermally heated and may smell of sulphur — this is normal and safe.
Practicalities
Electricity: 220V, European Type C/F plugs. Bring an adapter.
Language: English is spoken fluently across Iceland.
SIM cards: Available at the airport duty-free and at petrol stations.
WiFi: Available at most hotels, cafés and restaurants.
Hotel check-in: From 14:00 · Check-out by 12:00.
Laundry: Hotels rarely have laundry facilities — self-service laundromats are available in larger towns.
Emergency
Emergency number: 112 — Police, ambulance, search & rescue.
Pharmacies (Apótek) generally open 09:00–17:00.
Healthcare is excellent but costly — ensure your travel insurance includes medical cover.
