Tour Route

The extended peripheral tour along the gorgeous landscapes of Iceland. The tours includes Nature Reserve Jökulsárgljúfur where you will visit a waterfall Dettifoss – the most powerful waterfall in Europe and the valley Ásbyrgi created by the violent flood of glacial river. You will visit the Snæfellsnes Peninsula with Snæfellsjökull Glacier, Lake Mývatn, Park Skaftafell, Glacier Lagoon, and many more... The route length is nearly 2070 km.

Route Length : 2070 km. (Nearly)
Season: May1st - Sep30th

Day 1 - Landing in Keflavik Airport - Reykjavik.

Car pick up is at the airport. After check-in at the hotel and quick arrangements, you may want to go out for a walk in the downtown of Reykjavik. Reykjavik is one of the cleanest and most pleasant cities in the world. Its population is 120000 residents (about 70% of the entire population of Iceland!). Reykjavik is the economic, cultural and governmental center of Iceland. The city center is lively and has a special cosmopolitan atmosphere. Recommended to take a walk around the lake with swans in the city center near the parliament building.

Today's main sites: Reykjavik.

Day 2 - Golden Circle route - park Thingvellir - Geysir - Gullfoss Waterfall.

The Golden Circle tour is an "obligatory" tour that includes several important and well- known attractions of Iceland. After leaving Reykjavik within driving distance of three quarters of an hour, you will reach the national park of historical and geological importance. Thingvellir Park (Þingvellir) is known mostly as a place where you can walk between the continents. The park is a place of connection between two tectonic plates of Eurasia and America. Exactly at this point, the two plates lift a little over the ground and create a land bridge between the plates, which is used as an impressive gate to the park. One of the world's most famous dive sites Silfra is also located in the park's area, between the continents the crystal clear water is accumulated and you can see through to a depth of 100 meters! Thingvellir Park is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Continuing our tour, you will visit Geysir, one of the symbols of Iceland, which bursting steam is one of the most surprising natural attractions. Not many people know, but the erupting geyser is only one of many found in the park. The third stop in the Golden Circle tour is the Golden Waterfall (Gullfoss). Enormous amount of water melted from the glacier Langjökull is falling down with a tremendous force in one of the most impressive waterfalls in the world. You can watch rainbow over the waterfall all the time during the summer. On the Golden Circle there are some more interesting sites like the volcanic crater Kerið and the waterfall Faxi nearby. Estimated driving distance: 210 km.

Today's main sites: Crater Kerið - Geyser - Gullfoss Waterfall – Thingvellir National Park
Accommodation: Selfoss area \ Golden Circle

Day 3 - Waterfall Skógafoss - Dyrhólaey Nature Reserve - Kirkjubaejarklaustur

The Ring Road along the south of Iceland passes through some of Iceland's most dramatic landscapes. The flat area after the village Hvolsvöllur turns sharply into mountainous region dominated by two large glaciers, black lava shores and numerous waterfalls. Glacier Eyjafjallajökull and Glacier Mýrdalsjökull formed the southern coast of Iceland. Under both glaciers are located two very active volcanoes, one of which erupted in 2010 and caused aviation chaos in Europe. From the glaciers are falling two huge waterfalls. Waterfall Seljalandsfoss, which has a unique walking trail that allows surrounding the waterfall in 360- degrees and waterfall Skógarfoss – enormous flow falling with the immense power from a height of sixty meters. Later yoiu will reach the famous cliff Dyrhólaey, which is the southernmost point in Iceland and the black beaches visible from the top of the cliff have already appeared in many movies. You will pass the black drift shores and the big lava field Eldhraun to the isolated village Kirkjubæjarklaustur where you will also visit the adjacent canyon Fjadrargljufur. Estimated driving distance: 160 km.

Today's main sites: Waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss - Solheimajokull Glacier - Canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur - Dyrhólaey Nature Reserve - Kirkjubaejarklaustur
Accommodation: Kirkjubaejarklaustur area
Optional activities: Snowmobile tour on the Mýrdalsjökull

Day 4 - National Park Skaftafell - Ice Lagoon.

Ice Lagoon

After visiting the south of Iceland, you will reach the area where the main actor is Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. You cannot describe the landscape of Iceland without having to extend on the importance of this huge glacier influencing the whole island. The glacier is covering 8% of the territory and the volcanic activity of the volcanoes beneath the ice coat is continuously changing the surface. Vatnajökull National Park, on the territory of which are located many important sites, is now the largest national park in Europe. Skaftafell Park is one of the highlights of this area. In the dramatic landscape, surrounded by the glacier, the magical green park is located with numerous hiking trails leading to the viewpoints over the huge glacier and many waterfalls, the best known of which is the black basalt waterfall. Down the road to the east of the park, there is the colorful Glacier Lagoon - the fragments of icebergs break away from the big glacier and are then floating in the water. The visitors can only be amazed in front of this power and beauty. Lagoon cruise in the amphibian boat is available throughout the period of the summer. Estimated driving distance: 200 km.

Today's main sites: National Park Skaftafell - Ice Lagoon – Höfn village.
Accommodation: Höfn area
Optional activities: Cruise at Jökulsárlón Lagoon

Day 5 - Egilsstaðir - East Fjords - Forest Hallormsstaður.

Long fjords, slotted by the sharp mountains, picturesque fishermen's villages and herds of reindeers - these are the distinctive signs of the East Fjords region. Driving along the East Fjords is as a trip to another country, the geographic and cultural distance from Reykjavik changed the character of its residents. The pace is slower here and the fjords and the surrounding mountains are the perfect background for a sailing and fishing life. Fiords and small islands scattered around them are great places for many species of sea birds like white swans and puffins. Iceland's largest forest is located in the east of Iceland and the nearby "hanging" waterfall Hengifoss is one of Iceland's highest waterfalls. Its walking path is offering one of the most beautiful viewpoints in this region. Traveling through this area, it is recommended to keep your eyes open, maybe you will see one of the herds of wild reindeers along the road. Estimated driving distance: 280 km.

Today's main sites: Egilsstaðir - East Fjords.
Accommodation: Egilsstaðir area.

Day 6 - Dettifoss waterfall - National Park Jökulsárgljúfur - Husavik.

From Egilsstaðir - the main town in eastern Iceland, the way goes northward. The scenery changes abruptly from green to reddish-brown – the color of the mountain plateau that separates the east of Iceland from the north. The powerful Dettifoss waterfall is the result of the melting of glacier Vatnajökull located many miles to the south from there. The river Jökulsá á Fjöllum flows with all the intensity from the glacier towards the sea, creating the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The sight of it is awesome! During the history full of geologically catastrophic events, Ásbyrgi Valley was created to the north of the waterfall. A sudden enormous wave of melting water cut in the ground vast valley surrounded by high rock wall. It is hard not to be thrilled in front of the mighty natural phenomenon that took only a few minutes to form. Later from the town of Húsavík there is an excellent opportunity to watch the whales in the peaceful waters of the nearby bay. Estimated driving distance: 250 km.

Today's main sites: Canyon Ásbyrgi - Jökulsárgljúfur - Dettifoss waterfall - Husavik
Accommodation: Husavik area
Optional activities: Whale-watching Cruise from Husavik

Day 7 - The lunar landscape of the Lake Mývatn.

Lake Mývatn area is considered the jewel in the crown of the north of Iceland. Here many interesting sites are concentrated on a relatively small geographic area. Crater Hverfjall is the largest crater in Iceland that looks as if it was created by a meteor; its perfect shape conceals the fact that it is the volcanic phenomenon. Walking trail leads to the head of the crater. Walking along the trails of Leirhnjúkur is like walking on another planet. Sulfur odors and intense colors are the fresh evidence of Krafla volcano eruption, which is located nearby. Viti crater at the top of Krafla is a stop that should not to be missed. Many other sites are located around the lake. In the area of the Lake Mývatn, it is recommended to visit the wonderful thermal baths for a relaxing break in this "one in a lifetime" scenery. Estimated driving distance: 240 km.

Today's main sites: Mývatn.
Accommodation: Akureyri

Day 8 - Akureyri - Northern Iceland - Tröllaskagi Peninsula.

Not far from Lake Mývatn the Gods Waterfall (Goðafoss) is located - one of the many stunning waterfalls that decorate Iceland. Besides its beauty, the waterfall has a historical significance and it is a mandatory stop on the way to the capital of the North, Akureyri. People who live in Akureyri are proud of their beautiful town standing close to the picturesque fjord and enjoying some of the best weather conditions in Iceland despite its northern location. Akureyri is the gate to the Troll Peninsula (Trollaskagi) - tongue-shaped piece of land with high mountains and many glaciers. A trip around the peninsula offers the most dramatic landscapes of Iceland. It is great to stop in the villages along the way and enjoy the wonderful view. Region Skagafjorður, to the west of Akureyri, is one of the best places in Iceland for the horseback riding tours. Icelandic horses are foraging in the farms along the roadside and they are a source of pride for the locals. Icelandic horses are unique species that grew in the conditions of isolation and constant improvement during the centuries. Estimated driving distance: 200 km.

Today's main sites: Akureyri - Skagafjörður Mountain Ridge
Accommodation: Skagafjörður Mountain Ridge

Day 9 - Skagafjörður Mountain Ridge - Vastnes Peninsula - Stykkishólmur.

The bright green landscape of Skagafjorður region is slowly changing as you approach to the Vastnes Peninsula on the circular Ring Road. Many legends have been associated with this peninsula, colonies of seals can be found on its shores and the tourists can watch them on the beaches. On the north-west side of the peninsula, from the distance you can see the high mountain peaks of the West Fjords. A giant statue of frozen lava, which reminds a shipwreck, adorns the shores of the peninsula. After surrounding the peninsula, you will continue to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Stykkishólmur is the main fishermen's village of this region. In the center of the village there is a natural harbor - island connected to the mainland. Stairs lead to the lighthouse at the highest point of the island to the stunning viewpoint over thousands of islands scattered in the nearby bay. Stykkishólmur is a great place to start the tour to the national park located down the road. Estimated driving distance: 350 km.

Today's main sites: Glaumbær grass houses - Vastnes Peninsula
Accommodation: Stykkishólmur

Day 10 - Snæfellsness Peninsula - Snæfellsjökull Park

You will start our visit of the unique Snæfellsnes Peninsula from the lovely village of Stykkishólmur. Stykkishólmur with its charming little port was once the center of commerce and transportation. Today many efforts are made to preserve its ancient houses. The oldest building is a Norway House, which currently serves as a museum of folklore. Many artists live in the village and in the summer artists market is open here, and also many cafes and restaurants. The most beautiful view can be seen from the church and from the building of the Library of Water. The sea area contains numerous rocks and shoals so that is why there are many lighthouses here. One huge rock protects the harbor, and you can climb it (there are stairs) and enjoy the beauty of the small village on the background of the snowy peaks. The "Holy Mountain" (Helgafell) is an entrance to the village and there are remains of a church and monastery. Gudrun, the heroine of the Laxdæla Saga, one of Iceland's most beautiful sagas telling the story of a tragic love triangle, spent the rest of her life in a monastery on the hill. The ride along the road surrounding the Snæfellsnes leads us to the mountainous scenery, green spaces, small waterfalls coming down from the mountains and settlements with small ports. Almost from anywhere you can see the glacier in the head of the volcano. Traveling on the roads that cross the peninsula is an amazing experience. Snæfellsjökull glacier covers an active volcano, where begins the "journey to the center of the Earth" in Jules Verne's famous book. Snæfellsjökull Park offers its visitors a wide variety of walking tracks, attractions, magnificent landscapes, natural phenomena and many birds nesting in this area. The area is associated with many historical figures and sagas. You will spend the rest of the day in this area. In the afternoon you will drive to Reykjavik. Estimated driving distance: 230 km.

Today's main sites: Crater Eldborg - Stykkishólmur - Snæfellsjökull Glacier - Arnarstapi and Hellnar.
Accommodation: Reykjavik.

Day 11 - Reykjavik - Blue Lagoon - Keflavik (flight).

The rest of the day you will spend in Reykjavik, before the flight will stop for a dip in the Blue Lagoon located near the airport.
