Under both glaciers are located two very active volcanoes, one of which erupted in 2010 and caused aviation chaos in Europe. From the glaciers are falling two huge waterfalls. Waterfall Seljalandsfoss, which has a unique walking trail that allows surrounding the waterfall in 360- degrees and waterfall Skógarfoss – enormous flow falling with the immense power from a height of sixty meters. Later yoiu will reach the famous cliff Dyrhólaey, which is the southernmost point in Iceland and the black beaches visible from the top of the cliff have already appeared in many movies. Vatnajökull National Park, on the territory of which are located many important sites, is now the largest national park in Europe. Skaftafell Park is one of the highlights of this area. In the dramatic landscape, surrounded by the glacier, the magical green park is located with numerous hiking trails leading to the viewpoints over the huge glacier and many waterfalls, the best known of which is the black basalt waterfall. Long fjords, slotted by the sharp mountains, picturesque fishermen's villages and herds of reindeers - these are the distinctive signs of the East Fjords region. Driving along the East Fjords is as a trip to another country, the geographic and cultural distance from Reykjavik changed the character of its residents. The pace is slower here and the fjords and the surrounding mountains are the perfect background for a sailing and fishing life. Fiords and small islands scattered around them are great places for many species of sea birds like white swans and puffins. Iceland's largest forest is located in the east of Iceland and the nearby "hanging" waterfall Hengifoss is one of Iceland's highest waterfalls. The scenery changes abruptly from green to reddish-brown – the color of the mountain plateau that separates the east of Iceland from the north. The powerful Dettifoss waterfall is the result of the melting of glacier Vatnajökull located many miles to the south from there. The river Jökulsá á Fjöllum flows with all the intensity from the glacier towards the sea, creating the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The sight of it is awesome! During the history full of geologically catastrophic events, Ásbyrgi Valley was created to the north of the waterfall. A sudden enormous wave of melting water cut in the ground vast valley surrounded by high rock wall. It is hard not to be thrilled in front of the mighty natural phenomenon that took only a few minutes to form. Walking trail leads to the head of the crater. Walking along the trails of Leirhnjúkur is like walking on another planet. Sulfur odors and intense colors are the fresh evidence of Krafla volcano eruption, which is located nearby. Viti crater at the top of Krafla is a stop that should not to be missed. Many artists live in the village and in the summer artists market is open here, and also many cafes and restaurants. The most beautiful view can be seen from the church and from the building of the Library of Water. The sea area contains numerous rocks and shoals so that is why there are many lighthouses here. One huge rock protects the harbor, and you can climb it (there are stairs) and enjoy the beauty of the small village on the background of the snowy peaks. The "Holy Mountain" (Helgafell) is an entrance to the village and there are remains of a church and monastery. Gudrun, the heroine of the Laxdæla Saga, one of Iceland's most beautiful sagas telling the story of a tragic love triangle, spent the rest of her life in a monastery on the hill. The ride along the road surrounding the Snæfellsnes leads us to the mountainous scenery, green spaces, small waterfalls coming down from the mountains and settlements with small ports. Almost from anywhere you can see the glacier in the head of the volcano. Traveling on the roads that cross the peninsula is an amazing experience. Snæfellsjökull glacier covers an active volcano, where begins the "journey to the center of the Earth" in Jules Verne's famous book.
