The bumpy ride to Lakagígar is well worth the effort because there are several unique natural wonders that made the Craters of Laki world famous. The walking track in the unusual and fascinating craters is only accessible by foot. Craters of Laki are the remarkable result of the enormous destruction and devastation that took place in Iceland in the 18th century. This global disaster that swept away thousands of human beings, animals, destroyed a great deal of property, had its consequences almost everywhere. Volcanic ash that covered the sky caused hunger even in Japan! Today's Craters of Laki in South Iceland attracts many visitors from around the world who come to see the unique natural phenomenon which is also a reminder to all of us how much our destiny is related to each other and to Mother Earth. Craters of Laki are located on ten sockets, the length of each of which is 2-5 km. At the southern end of the line of the craters stands the mountain Hnúta, where the first fissure was opened. Eruptions were accompanied by frequent earthquakes. During each eruption a new fissure was opened northern to the previous one. There were probably at least 10 cycles of volcanic activity during eight months. As a result, a series of craters were created while the largest is in the middle, a total of 135 craters.
