A Unique Geothermal Spa Experience
Located near Lake Mývatn, the Mývatn Nature Baths are often referred to as “The Blue Lagoon of the North.” Similar to its southern counterpart, the lagoon features a unique blend of minerals, silicates, and geothermal microorganisms, giving the water its iconic pearly blue hue. The water supply comes directly from Bjarnarflag, the geothermal borehole managed by Iceland’s national power company. When the water reaches a massive basin near the lagoon, its temperature is approximately 130°C (266°F). From there, it cools to a soothing 36-40°C (97-104°F) in the lagoon, creating a warm, man-made oasis with a total volume of around 3.5 million liters.

The lagoon is a man-made structure with a sandy and gravel-covered bottom. It’s mineral-rich, making it ideal for bathing. Thanks to its chemical composition, the water prevents unwanted bacteria and vegetation, eliminating the need for chlorine or other disinfectants.
Geothermal waters in Iceland typically contain sulfur. It’s advised not to bring silver jewelry into the water, as it may tarnish. On the positive side, sulfur is known to benefit individuals with asthma, respiratory issues, and skin conditions. While the sulfur smell is noticeable, most visitors quickly adapt to it. Some describe it as the scent of volcanic origins, reminiscent of creation itself, while others liken it to the aroma of hard-boiled eggs.
