History and Features

In the summer of 2019, Vök Geothermal Baths opened on the shores of Lake Urriðavatn, located northwest of Egilsstaðir, the main town in East Iceland. Egilsstaðir is a key stop in the fascinating East Fjords region, and these new hot baths now offer visitors a unique opportunity to soak in warm geothermal waters surrounded by the breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Discovery and Origins
The baths are fed by a natural hot spring beneath the lake. For years, locals noticed a peculiar phenomenon during Iceland’s long, cold winters: the ice covering Lake Urriðavatn always melted at a specific spot. Investigations revealed a natural hot spring, which eventually led to the creation of these modern baths. The name Vök is Icelandic for “hole in the ice,” directly referencing the natural occurrence of the spring melting the lake’s ice.

Infrastructure and Sustainability
Today, the hot spring waters not only supply the baths but also benefit the local community in Egilsstaðir and the surrounding area. The project integrates natural beauty with advanced sustainable technology, preserving and utilizing natural resources efficiently.

A Unique Experience

Vök Baths offer visitors geothermal pools filled with pure, naturally hot water directly from the spring. The complex features a unique floating pool on the lake, enhancing the immersive experience. Additionally, guests can enjoy a sauna, cold rainfall showers, and a café with a special menu, including herbal teas made from the hot spring water itself.

Getting to Vök Baths
The baths are just a short drive (about 5 km) from Egilsstaðir, a popular base for exploring East Iceland. A visit to Vök Baths is the perfect way to relax after a day of hiking in the East Fjords or as a stop along the Icelandic Ring Road. Vök Baths combine wild nature, unique history, and modern facilities, ensuring an unforgettable Icelandic experience.

What to Bring
Visitors are advised to bring swimwear and a towel, though rentals are available on-site.
