Land at Keflavik, collect your rental car and head into the capital. Reykjavik is compact enough to explore on foot — wander the old harbour, climb up to Hallgrímskirkja for panoramic views over the city, and settle into the café culture that makes this one of the world's most liveable capitals.
Drive north along Hvalfjörður (Whale Bay) to the trailhead for Glymur — Iceland's second-tallest waterfall at 198m, reached via a scenic hike through a gorge with log-river crossings and sweeping canyon views. Continue inland to Reykholt and Snorrastofa, then to the enchanting Hraunfossar — hundreds of natural springs bubbling from beneath an ancient lava field — and the rushing Barnafoss.
Cross the highland Kaldidalur pass — a dramatic gravel road between two glaciers rarely seen by tourists — to reach Þingvellir National Park (UNESCO), where the North American and Eurasian plates visibly split apart and the world's first parliament convened in 930 AD. Strokkur erupts reliably at the Geysir geothermal area. Gullfoss thunders into a two-stage canyon. End with a dip in the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir, Iceland's oldest natural bathing pool.
Start with Seljalandsfoss — one of the only waterfalls in the world you can walk behind — and thundering Skógafoss. Then turn off the ring road into the hidden gem of Þakgil, a sheltered canyon carved deep into the flanks of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. The trail to Mælifell leads through black volcanic sand desert to a perfectly conical moss-green volcano rising alone from the glacial outwash — one of Iceland's most extraordinary sights and rarely visited. Finish at the dramatic Reynisfjara black sand beach.
Skaftafell National Park sits beneath Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier. The trail to Svartifoss passes through birch woodland before arriving at the Black Waterfall — framed by perfect hexagonal basalt columns. Continue to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where ancient icebergs calve from the glacier and drift silently toward the sea, with seals riding the current. Diamond Beach glitters where ice crystals wash ashore onto black volcanic sand.
Drive back west, stopping in Hveragerði — a town literally built on geothermal energy, where hot springs push through the earth between the buildings. From here, hike the Reykjadalur (Smoking Valley) trail: a 6km round trip through steaming hillsides, bubbling mud pools and rainbow-coloured mineral deposits, ending at a natural hot river where you can bathe in geothermally heated water flowing straight out of the earth. Return to Reykjavik for your final night.
A final morning in Reykjavik — browse the design shops along Laugavegur, grab a coffee by the harbour, or visit a last museum. Return your car at Keflavik Airport and board your flight home carrying seven days of Iceland's wildest trails fresh in the memory.

By completing a booking, you enter into a binding agreement with Another Iceland and confirm that you have read, understood, and accepted these terms. Self-drive packages include accommodation and car rental. Payment is processed in euros (€) via Visa or MasterCard.
