It depends. For classic routes covering the island along the Ring Road (including the Westfjords and Snæfellsnes Peninsula), a 4×4 is unnecessary. However, for routes involving central Iceland, a 4×4 is required, and for some itineraries, a high-clearance 4×4 capable of crossing rivers may also be necessary.
